I was going to read the third part of Daniel Pink’s book, Drive, today but decided that it would be lacking without first reading Chapter 2, Seven Reasons Carrots and Sticks Don’t Work. Chapter 2 gives a great discussion of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards in motivation.
Sorry in advance for my terrible cold. This has been a long week and I could not get to my Saturday guru management reading. Hoping this will suffice and you can get through a few far spaced snuffles to hear chapter 2 of Daniel Pink’s wonderful work, Drive.
- Less of What We Want
- Intrinsic Motivation
- High Performance
- Creativity
- Good Behavior
- More of What We Don’t Want
- Unethical Behavior
- Addiction
- Short-Term Thinking
CARROTS AND STICKS: The Seven Deadly Flaws
- They can extinguish intrinsic motivation
- They can diminish performance
- They can crush creativity
- They can crowd out good behavior
- They can encourage cheating, shortcuts, and unethical behavior
- They can become addictive
- They can foster short-term thinking
